Some NIght for Night Photography

Let me start with a definition of terms. In movies many night sequences are shot during the day and then modified to appear as tho
ugh shot at night. This is called, "day for night." There are two things that give it away. One is the presence of a lot of colour and the other is a pale sky. "Night for night" happens when night sequences are actually shot at night. The colours are usually muted and the sky is black.

On Monday, September 28, 2015 at about 4 p.m. The electricity went off for a second. Later at about 8:30 p.m. the electricity went off again but it didn't come back on right away. After a few minutes I went outside to see the limits of the power outage. I found crews from the Hydro company working on some wires. I went back home and got my camera. I found out later that at around 4 p.m. there had been a car accident that had taken out the pole and that otherwise the people involved were all OK.

I took the following pictures of the work at night without a flash. The exception is the second picture. I took it with a flash and then decided not to use it. Some of them are blurry. That's because at that light level the shutter speed is slow and the camera needs to be held very steady. Ideally it should be on a tripod. The pictures are in the order taken and I have not taken any out of the sequence.

I went home after all the trucks left. The power came on less than a minute after arriving home.

Le Parc de l'Imaginaire

Le Parc de l'Imaginaire occupies a place in the west end of Aylmer in Québec where rue Principale turns northward. In this cultural park several whimsical art pieces surround a gazebo, which could serve as a band stand or stage.

Bunny

When I bought my camera I made a point of getting a longer lens for it. An 18-55mm lens came with the camera. For most things that lens serves very well. I bought a 75-300mm lens so I could get closer to subjects like animals and birds that will run away if you get too close to them physically with a shorter lens on the camera. This lens isn't ideal but it was within my budget and occasionally it does serve its purpose.

It did that today when a bunny came along to get the fallen seeds from the bird feeder on the crab apple tree out front. I quickly got my camera changed to the longer lens and took the following four pictures. I have to work hard to keep the camera steady with the lens fully extended and I think I'm getting the hang of it.
